frequently asked questions.

basics

So what's this game about?

Fractura, at its heart, is about character arcs, development, and player-driven initiatives in a world-hopping, AU-optional game. Players will be moving from world to world with the option to craft AUs for their characters as they please to match the world, but will be focusing on making meaningful CR and engaging with their environment in order to challenge their characters to grow - or perhaps become who they always were.

What is the IC/OOC Day Ratio?

One IC day is equal to one OOC day! Let's keep it nice and easy.

Will my characters have access to their powers?

For the most part - yes! The obvious restriction to this rule is anything gamebreaking. Characters who would be able to teleport through worlds on their own, or rewrite the entire universe... will probably not be able to get those powers back during their course of the game. While they would not necessarily be missing those pieces as Fragments - or they could be, if you want them to! - they will not be able to get back in touch with those powers until they regain all of their missing Fragments and then choose to permanently leave their Fractura journey.

Otherwise, character powers will be restricted in two other scenarios: you as a player choose to make that power missing as their Fragment, or the character will be Remixed. Remixes must match the powers and magic of the world that they're existing in, so your character's powers might not look exactly the same. More on that later though!

My character is a vampire/zombie/has other supernatural dietary needs. Help?

Haha!

Well, that's definitely up to whatever the player chooses to do! The character can lose this specific dietary need as one of their Fragments, or they can do their best to satisfy their need as canon intended by using either other player characters or assorted NPCs within the various worlds they travel to.

If you want to have a chat about it, contact Dana for alternatives. :)

What characters can I app?

Characters from canons such as games, books, anime, movies, comics/webcomics, TV, etc whose apps will be more than 75% canon (and thus 25% headcanon or less), OCs, and CRAU Game Imports will all be accepted at this time! You may not app a real person, but characters based off of real people from fictional canons are acceptable (looking at you Shinsengumis out there).

Duplicates are for the most part not accepted with exception of characters that are easily proved to be different from one another due to writing - for example, Peter Parker from Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker from The Amazing-Spiderman, and Peter B. Parker from Into the Spider-Verse may all be apped at the same time.

However a version of a character directly from canon, and a CRAU import of that same character are not allowed to exist in the game at the same time.

Can my character bring along anything from home? Including pets?

Characters will be waking up with anything that they might've had on their person at the time of their canonpoint! The exception is, of course, unless you chose to claim one of their usual possessions as a Fragment, in which case that will be missing.

Pets and other companions will have to be regained as Fragments.

My character is a robot/alien/sentient toaster.

Fantastic! They'll be played pretty much exactly as they are, missing attribute Fragments aside. If they're normally any taller than 8' or so, we'll probably have to resize them to make sure that they can interact with everyone else normally. Otherwise any changes to their physiology will be OOCly voluntary based on what you want their Fragments to be.

Are there any application caps?

There are! Thank you for asking.

There will be fifty players allowed in the game, total. Players who are on Dana's friendslist can be considered automatically invited, whereas others might be allowed based on a +1 system.

Each player will be able to play up to three characters, and only one character from each canon.

Canon casts will be capped at four characters.

New canons or new information from canons must wait one month before being available for the application cycle.

Are app challenges allowed?

Nope! Let's keep it clean.

How often will app cycles be open?

Apps will be open every time characters return to The Space! Since worlds will run on a 4 to 6 week cycle, applications for new characters will accepted during the last week of that World’s duration, and they will be integrated into the game once The Space is opened up again.

What is the Activity Check requirement?

For every month’s Activity Check, you’ll be expected to complete 2 threads with at least 5 comments coming from you. At least one thread will need to be with someone that you didn’t turn in a thread with for AC the previous month.

Bonus Activity Check will be available - if your threads equal 30 comments from you or more (and you can provide a third supplemental thread to add to this total), then you will earn one Bonus AC token. There’s a maximum of one AC token per character per month. These AC tokens can be used to cash in bonuses for your character’s Faction!

Hiatuses must span at least two weeks in that month’s AC period in order for someone to be excused for turning in their AC that month.

How do hiatuses work?

Fabulous question! There are a few options for this -

If we are in the middle of a World, your character can be Remixed and fade right into the background! They can essentially default to NPC status, and they just won’t interact with the world in any meaningful way that would allow them to regain a Fragment, but they won’t be penalized either!

If all characters are in The Space - your character can be frozen! They’ll be somewhere in The Space, but not entirely themselves. They’ll be glitching, as though they are not entirely present. They won’t be conscious, and won’t die from forgetting to feed themselves, they’ll just be… there but not really There. Physically present, mentally absent.

Or you can autopilot! Whatever works for you.

How do drops work?

Well, you have two options! Regardless of which you choose, please use the handy dandy drop page.

The first option is a very classic drop. You choose to let go of your character, and then they just disappear. Mid-world or in The Space - regardless of which it is, your character is gone and no one really has any answers for where they've ended up. Shit happens.

The second option is called an Exit Strategy! More information can be found on the Drop Page, but if players would like to tie up their character's arc before letting them go, they're free to use an Exit Strategy in order to run a mini-dungeon for them and their CR before they disappear.

fragments

Give me a rundown of Fragments again.

You got it, boss!

Here's the list of possible Fragments.
Items » The most obvious of the possible Fragments - characters can lose an item that's very important to them. Weapons, keepsakes, treasures that mean the world to them. They'll be able to notice that these are missing.
Attributes » If your character has something that's very distinct about them, or important to their physiology. that can be a Fragment. For example, Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters can find themselves without their Crest. Depending on the attribute, characters may notice this missing right away, or need to realize what it is later.
Powers & Skills » If your character has a supernatural power or highly developed skill, that can be a Fragment. This varies widely by character and can either be noticed right away, or discovered to be missing later on.
Memories » Any memory deemed important can become a Fragment. These memories can vary in importance and depth, whether it's an event in a person's life, or they can forget an entire person, or as specific as forgetting the identity of someone who wronged them. Characters will not be able to notice their missing memory Fragments until it's brought to their attention.

The running theme for Fragments is that they're influential and core to your character's development, something worth regaining (or at least contemplating the loss of if the character does not wish to retrieve it again). They can be a mix and match of any of the above types. Characters will be missing 2 to 5 Fragments, based on player preference and discretion.

If I app in later, how many Fragments can I be missing?

Still 2 to 5! Whether you want to hustle to regain them all before game end, or just have enough for the remaining worlds - it's all up to you. I don't know your life, I'm not the boss of you.

What if I think of something else that doesn't fall into one of those categories for my Fragment?

If it doesn't fall in one of the above categories, just message Dana via PM and you can bring it up! In about 99% of situations, your answer will be a 'Sure, go for it,' but a check-in never hurt anyone, you know?

How specific can the missing memory Fragment be? How detailed can the item be?

Memory fragments are as malleable as you want them to be! They can forget an event, a purpose, a specific person during an event - the world is your oyster. Whatever you want to do in order to build your narrative.

For items, nothing gamebreaking! If the item is the magical type that grants a wish for example, maybe tap Dana and see if it comes with limitations - or if the universe will give your character an IOU voucher for their efforts. That would be funny. But in all seriousness, just ask if you think it'll break the game.

What if someone else tells my character about their missing Memory Fragment?

If they end up a situation where a castmate or someone else tries to fill in their missing memory, they'll find that the information just doesn't stick! Whether it's because they suddenly hear a TV-style censor so they don't hear the memory, or they fail at any attempt at charades, your character won't be able to absorb the information of their lost memory until they earn it back!

Do we have to report what our missing Fragments are?

Only for minor housekeeping purposes! On the Fragments page, you will be expected to report what your character's missing Fragments are - at least 2, but up to 5 is fine! All comments on that page are screened if you would rather keep your Fragments a secret. This is neither an expectation nor a recommendation, it's just so that the people who do want to surprise their friends will be able to! You can hide canon points, route choices, etc. this way and reveal them later if you want. The only ones who will know are you and me!

On that note, the one singular caveat is you cannot retcon additional Fragments if your character ICly possessed that piece when they arrived. So if you are on the fence about using something as a Fragment, just don't mention it! You can add additional Fragments until you hit the max OOCly, but ICly there is no mechanic that would cause a character to further go to pieces once they've arrived.

How are Fragments regained?

Excellent question! The general gist of it is that characters must experience a 'Momentous Event' in order to trigger the regain of a Fragment, something that resounds with their very soul. This is a lot of floof to basically summarize that you need one really important thread that furthered their character development in each World per Fragment that you hope to regain! Something really intense needs to happen in order for them to reclaim their Fragment.

There is the option for characters to connect their intense moments to the Fragment they're trying to regain - and this is encouraged! Say that someone is trying to regain a memory of being stabbed in the chest, you can have them in a World also get stabbed in the chest to lovingly relive that trauma. Wouldn't that be fun? :')

Not a requirement, though. Just a loving suggestion for narrative purposes.

Hopefully these intense moments will align with the core of their character, and guide them back to 'who they're supposed to be' so that they can be whole again!

But... if they don't...

If they don't?

Fragments are capable of being.... drumroll please - Corrupted.

(Audience Cheers)

For example! Say that Tony Stark is trying to regain the item of his original arc reactor, the Proof that Tony Stark Has a Heart, that one. Rather than having a pleasant experience in a World where he is touched by a loving memorabilia from a friend who loves him, say that instead he experiences a crushing break of his friendship with another person who thought he was too much trouble. That's an intense moment, absolutely! It's also just an incredibly negative one.

Upon returning to The Space, characters who had a Bad Time in the previous world will find their Fragment restored to them - but distorted. Items can be broken, powers can be disobedient and harder to wield, entire memories can be twisted and turned spiteful.

Fragments that have been Corrupted can perhaps eventually be restored to their former glory - but the method to do so hasn't been found just yet.

How many Fragments can we regain each world?

As many as you want! The maximum of missing Fragments is 5 - so as many as there are worlds to explore, including the December test run. If you'd like to stagger them all neatly and earn 1 per world, feel free! If you have an extremely dramatic month and earn 3 in a single world, awesome!

Just know that your character cannot have more than 5 missing Fragments in total for their entire time in the game. In addition, Corrupted Fragments still count as a Fragment regained.

Do we have to drop once we regain all our Fragments?

Nah. Chill out, overachiever. Pull up a seat, grab a drink, and watch everyone else suffer.

remixes

So what's a Remix?

A Remix is the fun way to basically describe an AU that you build for a given world. Every time a new world is coming up, a Plotting Post will go up that will give you the general information needed for the world and so that people can build their general AUs. Characters will basically get memories as if they lived their entire lives in that world, and had relationships with the other people who were Remixed. Build your own families, friendships, messy ex stories - do whatever you want!

Do we have to Remix?

Nope! If you'd rather keep playing your character with their canon memories (aside from any missing Fragments, obviously) and the knowledge that they're going to these worlds specifically to get Fragments back, feel free! They will be adjusted into the world as if they were always there, but they won't get any of the new powers or existing knowledge of the world outside of a very small primer when they arrive. Characters who aren't remixed will be referred to as Original or Original Flavor moving forward until we think of a better term.

Does our choice last for every world?

Nah! Take every world separately and based on what kind of AU you want to do! If one AU doesn't appeal to you, go Original. If the next one makes your heart go pitter patter, jump into the Remix. A new Plotting Post will go up a few days before every World Start so that you can plot with others and come up with something new and fresh each time.

Can we include someone who is still Original in a Remix's memories?

You can with the very important caveat that you need to make sure to communicate with the person who is still playing an Original Flavor! On plotting posts, Originals will have to indicate that they are open to being included in your AU. If someone is willing to play with the dynamics of their character suddenly wake up in a family they don't remember or recall, they're more than welcome to! However please respect people's boundaries if they're just not vibing with the world set-up and would prefer not to be AU'd.

Are there any limitations for Remixes?

For the most part, no! As long as you keep to the given lore of the world, there shouldn't be. If you have questions about a specific part of the world, refer to the top-level within the Plotting Post. By a general rule of thumb, I'll allow for most things as long as they won't get in the way of the plot or mechanics of the world, but you're free to ask for clarification on points.

In addition, a friendly reminder to engage in Content Warning-worthy topics only as much as necessary in public spaces, and to put in appropriate warnings and flags in bold before mentioning them.

world hops

How long do these World Hops last? What's the schedule?

It'll depend on the world! On average, adventures into the worlds will last about 4 to 6 weeks total, adjusting based on what the plot of the world demands. A mingle will go up at the World Start so that characters can begin exploring, and there will usually be a type of large event that requires a decision to be made by characters in order to determine the outcome of the world. Typically, you can assume an Event will go up every 2 weeks - so at the midway point for 4-week worlds, and at the 1/3rd and 2/3rds marks for 6-week worlds.

Additional, smaller interactive mini-events may pop up every now and then during worlds! They'll be done by mod discretion and announced when they happen. Those will only be small top-levels that are updated in the event log.

Both mini-events and the larger events will usually be foreshadowed by information that is revealed by one of the Key Roles.

Who are the Key Roles?

Every world, about 3 of the people who are Remixed will be chosen for a Key Role. These Key Roles will be steadily given additional information about upcoming events in the world that will hopefully allow the rest of the game to learn more that will help in whatever Decision they need to make by the end of the world hop. They're expected to be more active during that particular world hop to make sure that information is dispensed neatly alongside whatever mini-events appear during the course of the calendar.

Will you tell us who the Key Roles are?

Nope! Consider that part of the murdergame experimental mechanics.

AMENDED A new system is being tested regarding Key Roles, where players will be aware of their identities and who has been chosen for a Key Role in the World.

Key Roles are not meant to be the Main Characters of the world, but rather they're more like the substitute NPCs because your mods don't want to do all the plot dispensing on their own. Hopefully having people among you will make the flow of information more organic and easier to build a narrative with.

You said something about a Decision?

We're right on with the murdergame experimental mechanic train!

As mentioned, you'll only be deposited in worlds that are already in the middle of a bit of a kerfuffle. Whether that's war, a celebration, or something along those lines - there's going to be an outcome from whatever is going on in the plot. Based on character choices and what they would ICly like to do, there will typically be a Decision that they have to make by the end of the world hop. When that Decision comes up, a screened voting post will be linked to the game at large with the available choices. Characters will then have to choose from those available, and based on those results, the outcome of the world will be determined.

Is there ever a right answer? Do we have to save the world?

Nope! The one thing that can be promised is that no matter what the AU theme of the world is, there will never be a Correct Answer. No one is expected to always choose the morally righteous decision, or whatever they might conceive as Good. The purpose of each world is only to allow room for your character's arc, and the outcome might shape that as well.

What about separate player initiatives inside the world?

Oh hell yea! We're all about that here. If your character wants to start a coup in the kingdom or literally set the city on fire, just let Dana know and that'll initiate a talk about how to incorporate that into the event schedule.

The only thing that that people should be mindful of is that no one character should ever dominate an entire narrative for the world. It's important to be flexible! Otherwise - go wild, babey.

So what's the general order of events?

Glad you asked!

The Space
Downtime! Use this time to change Factions, talk about the previous world, decompress with everyone and talk about your regained Fragments. New applicants will also be admitted during this period.

New World Plotting Post
Here's your heads up about the upcoming world! Build your Remixes with people and get ready to return on the wild ride. Key Roles will also be chosen at this time.

World Start
What it says on the tin! A new Mingle will go up once the world can officially be played in, and smaller mini-events will appear in the form of top-levels at mod discretion.

New World Event
Every 2 weeks, a new larger event will happen! This may appear in a top-level, but if it's large enough and the original log looks full, a new mingle will be posted.

Decision
A screened OOC post will go up where characters will be expected to report on the choice they will make that'll count toward the world's overarching plot.

World End / Return to The Space
The outcome of the world will be posted, and characters will be allowed to transition back to The Space as the world disappears out of touch from them. They will receive their original memories if Remixed and the results of their attempt to regain Fragments.

Repeat!
