kangai sure gets increasingly sick as they approach, so he knows what's coming even before the corpse comes into view.
... the baby is a surprise, though.]
... Oh...
[he doesn't reach out for the infant, though, partly because he assumes lan wangji will and partly to avoid touching the corpse and activating his power.]
[OH. WELL. That does get his entire demeanor to shift, and Kangai is right!! He's immediately moving, putting his knife and gun away and crouching down next to the woman. He spares a minute to wipe his hands off on his pants (not great but better than nothing, since they were just bumming around in the sewer) before he reaches for the baby, trying very carefully to extract it.]
[ IIIII... Five days, maybe, if he assumes it was made by someone being kept there; five hours seems hard to take note of, and five weeks is too long to measure. A regular person would keep track of days, if it's time-based.
Only if, that.
He didn't expect to find too much anyway - there can't be too much on people when they're taken, especially because, well. They're probably stripped of anything nice or identifying by their captors, so he's not too terribly disappointed. In fact, the only thing he feels is a sense of unease as he peeks into the open door and, as what it is registers in his mind, dread.
Tsukasa spares a look at Lan Wangji and Kangai, then goes into the room to check it out better. Is the device turned on? Can he disconnect the potable box... And is there anything else in this room that's notable, or is that it. ]
It's not too difficult to pry the baby away. The motion sort of startles it into not crying, eyes large and brown and watery. It stares up at Lan Wangji for two or three beats, and then it gives an airy, happy squeal.
Tsukasa won't find anything else in the little room except for the device. It's not turned on, so he can touch it without any kind of vibe check. The portable box can be disconnected, too! You know, for evidence and not for using it on people who are thrown in jail. Right?]
[BABY!!! He'll hold it carefully, tucking it into his arm and trying to wipe away any dirt (or blood?? WHAT IS UP WITH THIS BABY) off of its face. He'll also try and gently check it over for injuries or... anything notable.]
Can you check her over?
[For anything that stands out... he'd do it himself but his hands are. Kinda full.]
[ YES IT'S FOR EVIDENCE OH MY GOD.... Tsukasa is the nice cop, remember.
But cool, he'll take that and head out. Are there any other doors inside as he goes along the wall or nah, should he just go hang with the newly formed babysitter's club. ]
[Bitty Baby is just covered in dirt and streaks of tears! It fusses a bit grumpily when Lan Wangji wipes at it, reaching out to latch its little hands on one of Lan Wangji's fingers to hold it. This finger is the baby's now, binch.
Tsukasa won't find any other doors that don't obviously lead outside of the building, so he'll get to join the Babysitter's Club over by the incinerator and the body of the woman.
Hm! Will Kangai go ahead and Haley Joel Osment it, or will he let Tsukasa?]
The woman, to Kangai, feels tired. The fatigue is almost bone-deep. There's sadness and hopelessness, but more than that, the urge to lie down, close her eyes, and sleep for a long time. Can't. There's a baby. Always, there's a baby; most of the time it's crying. It doesn't ever end. Even the wails bring a small sense of happiness.
A cackling woman (she's more angular and uglier in the woman's mind, but has on a white dress and a lot of jewels, a sparkly belt) comes to inspect them. This the woman knows because the other woman spends most of the time crowing about how they look, whether they're worth it, what to do with the bodies if they die. They go to the incinerator of course; the woman can still smell the sickeningly sweet scent of burning flesh. The fancy woman gives her a pill, "for pain."
She feels sick for a long time, and she wonders if her stomach will ever stop cramping and rolling. She vomits for a long time, and they have to move her somewhere else. She just feels so tired, even in such short days, that she lies down and goes to sleep. But she doesn't wake up.
Something hard can be felt somewhere on the woman's clothes close to the breastbone. There's a secret pouch, and inside is a tiny, golden locket. On one side is a very small picture of a woman and a baby. On the other side is the name, Delilah.]
[god, dying never stops being depressing. his regular reminder that the world sucks really hard.
to tsukasa and lan wangji, it probably looks as though kangai goes into a trance. some moments later, he returns to reality. while tsukasa presumably finds the pouch, he speaks.]
I think she just... died of exhaustion. Or lack of care, from the conditions they were keeping their captives in...
She is not the first. [He doesn't need any powers to figure that one out. The state of this room is evidence enough. He sighs.] And she will not be the last, if we do not get this child medical care.
[ Tsukasa rubs the name very gently, lips pressed tightly together, before he closes the locket and slips it back into the pouch. If either of them want to check it out he can pass it over to them, but he wants it back, okay!! ]
Then we should make that our priority, along with giving this woman a proper burial... I looked around, but there's not much else to this place. [ He pauses, then holds up the portable box. His voice is steady, but it's quiet as he continues. ] There was a room with a table, a chair, and this box... Connected to a metal headpiece. It's an electrocution device.
[ kangai should just thank his lucky stars that the woman just died of exhaustion and not of electrocution tbh- ]
Someone scratched five marks into their cage floor, too - I think to mark the passing of time, but I'm not sure - that's all I have to contribute.
[The baby holds onto Lan Wangji's finger with both hands, growing more content with this and closing its eyes. It's thankfully not wailing anymore. If he takes the finger away, though, the baby will start crying. She also likes to try nomming it sometimes.
They will find out later it's a girl!
But this is all they find in the warehouse before it's ultimately burned to the ground. RIP. For what it's worth, at least the police know! The people who left don't seem to come back, no matter how long they wait.]
[If it's a girl then Jiang Cheng definitely can't have her because he doesn't know how to talk to ladies :(
Cannibal Baby can have the finger, though, that's fine. He's got others.]
There is a woman at Yiling Ridge who may be able to care for her. If not, she likely knows someone who could. [Don't come for his bias shut up. Give Granny the baby.
As for the burial... he sighs quietly.]
This woman was likely a Mori. [That's been the pattern, so, y'know.] We should bring her back to Eastside. [He's assuming Tsukasa will want to confiscate the box as evidence.]
[ He's right about that! Though the woman can have her pouch and locket back; he's against stealing from the dead. ]
...This has to stop. [ more to himself, but he's going to nod and sigh. ] That all sounds good to me. I wish we could find her family and return her to them properly... It must be horrifying to not know what's happened to someone dear to you.
[ At least knowing if they're dead or alive is some type of comfort. ]
...It's going to be suspicious if we just walk around town with her though. [ unless they weekend at bernie's it ]
