9S won't stop them from leaving, though he's slow to move away from the stairwell. He'll risk a stab or two if it might get him some information.
"Hold on," he says quickly. "There've been some disappearances around here lately. I'm helping my friend from Xian Le get to the bottom of them. Would you two happen to know anything?"
He's bending the truth, but again -- he's desperate for any scrap of intel.
The girl hurriedly drags the boy by 9S (with a lot of side-stepping) and down the stairs, leaving behind their lantern and their game, but taking the lunchbox which is clutched in the boy's hands. The girl doesn't answer any of 9S's questions
Halfway down the stairs, with the boy looking curiously back over and over, he says, "It was Mister Xie Lian," and the girl shushes him again.
The two of them zip out of the door as the sound of car tires squeal, and headlights bleed through the tower windows. Something that sounds like snapping fireworks goes off, rapid-fire and loud, popping. Parts of the tower explode around 9S, and he finds--it's bullets! One nicks him as the tower is riddled with a handful of holes, but thankfully the car speeds away.
If 9S does some digging afterward, he'll find a single .308 caliber casing lying near the car's path. Hm...
Welp, 9S gets dinged in the arm and starts bleeding oil. Hm. Not ideal, but he can take care of that later.
If he hurries up to the windows and looks out, will he be able to see where the car is headed? And if he examines the kids' game, will he notice anything out of the ordinary about it?
There isn't anything special about the children's game, no! It looks like it may have been a kind of knucklebones game, but played with small domino-shaped pieces rather than metal jacks.
The black, soft-topped car speeds away in the direction of Middleton, but if it goes anywhere else, 9S can't tell.
